Update from Mr. Nishida
3/23/2020

Hey Wolves,

I hope this message finds you and your families healthy and safe. As I am sure you are all aware, we will be participating in Distance Learning for the next two weeks. Although I would much rather be in class with all of you, I am looking forward to the opportunities that Distance Learning will provide us. I will be outlining what the next two weeks will look like for us as well as give you updates on where we stand for the rest of the school year.

After much thought on what would be most beneficial for us during this period I decided to base our online class on three concepts; Exploring, Enjoying, and Interacting. Exploring can look like reviewing music theory, discovering a new artist, or using online tools to explore different musical topics/concepts. Enjoying can look like playing your favorite piece of music or song on your instrument, listening to your favorite artist, or watching an online performance. Interacting can look like participating in a virtual ensemble, hosting an online jam session with your friends, or interacting with your classmates in our Google Classroom.

In order to participate in our Distance Learning, you will need to join our Google Classroom.

Here is how to do it:

  1. Sign in to your Student Google Account
  2. Go to classroom.google.com
  3. Click on the + at the top right corner of the screen
  4. Select “Join Class”
  5. Enter the code: lp7mp3r 6.

And you’re in!

More information about how to use the Google Classroom and the different activities will be posted in the class itself.

As of right now Distance Learning will run until our Spring Break which begins on 4/6. However, given the current situation it is expected that this will be extended. This obviously has a huge impact on the rest of our school year. Due to the current school closure and government health guidelines the SRVUSD Band and Orchestra Festival (4/24-4/25) that was to be held in place of CMEA is canceled. Other events and performances may also be postponed or canceled but I want to be clear, no decision on remaining events or performances have been made. I will update you all as decisions are made but I plan on all events and performances to be held as scheduled until I am told otherwise.

I understand there are a lot of questions and confusion as to what will happen between now and the end of the school year. But given that the situation is constantly changing we will not be making any decisions until it is clear what the rest of the school year will look like. End of the Year Awards, Marching Leadership Auditions, Senior Solos, and Jazz Placements are on hold until we get further direction from the school district.

Lastly, I want to invite all of you to Google Meet, this is just an opportunity for us to see one another, check in, and dive into our Google Classroom. This will happen at 1:30 pm on Wednesday 3/25. I will send a link to join the Google Meet on Wednesday morning.

I understand that is new to all of us so if you have any questions or issues joining our Google Classroom please do not hesitate to contact me. I will be on email throughout the school day (Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-3:30 pm), and I will do my best to answer your message as soon as possible. If your problem or concern cannot be addressed properly over email you can also schedule a video chat with me.

Stay healthy and I look forward to seeing you in our online classroom!

Sincerely,

Brant Nishida
